What Regular Maintenance Should be Done on a Boat?

Performing regular maintenance on your boat not only extends the life of your vessel, but it can also save you thousands of dollars. At a high-level boat care includes keeping your boat clean and lubricated. Like your car or truck, a boat needs regular oil changes and tune-ups. Taking care of your boat (and boat trailer) reduces the chance of having a problem on the water or road.

Before you head out on the lake, we recommend that you always look at these things:

· Check the oil. Top it off if it’s low.

· Look at the propeller and skeg for damage.

· Check the oil pressure.

· Check the steering.

· Fuel. Be sure you have enough.

· Wash and rinse. Hey, you don’t go out without a shower, why should your boat?

· Check the fire extinguisher.

· Be sure your bilge pump is in working order.

· Make sure your battery is charged properly.

Every 50 hours of boat usage we recommend you add the following to your boat maintenance list:

· Check the fuel lines.

· Clean the bilge pump.

· Check all fluid levels, including the lower unit if you have one.

· Check the oil pressure.

When you have 100 hours on your boat you should perform the following maintenance:

· Replace oil & fuel filters.

· Check the engine mounts.

· Check the water pump impeller and consider replacement.

· Look at all fluid levels and refill as needed.

· Consider belt replacement and check all belts for signs of wear.

· Touch up paint and fix spider cracks.

· Check all mountings to ensure they are secure.
